Guardians in the Wild takes place in a community that really must be called a ghetto in the desert, sitting directly in the crosshairs of rural isolation.
WHY BOTHER? This story is really about embracing the pragmatic challenges toward honoring reverence for life. To confront this, the documentary is set as a groundbreaking assignment. In addition to the difficult terrain and often harsh conditions, attempting to carryout such an ambitious agenda has thus far proven quite challenging.
What happens when compassion becomes compromised as the world of practicality intrudes? When the realities of providing protection and care seem impossible, how long do you hang on? Is there a moral obligation; nevertheless?
This is precisely the dilemma that a courageous young woman in South Africa must face as she struggles to hurdle the breach between caring for 100 very young children and her role as a ranger fighting to end the poaching and killing of wildife. Her name is Nkateko Letti Mzimba and she comes from a village called Hluvukani. The place has virtually no economy, no jobs, no opportunity. Humans and non-humans alike, both face the same set of circumstances in their habitat, drought, a scant supply of water, and barely enough sustenance to keep going.
This story places the advocates in the midst of practical limitations that define what can be carried out, driven by deeply compassionate advocates who struggle to save one more life on the planet.
So it is: Guardians in the Wild is as much a story about synergistic relationships between deeply committed people from supportive organizations working together in the face of inexorable odds.
Artistic approach:
The approach for this film is a story told from the uncompromising landscape. The look will diverge from traditional formats working toward an active, visual vocabulary, imbued with warm, human realities, and at times perhaps even fun. Atmosphere, color, energy, embracing the unvarnished reality and grit in the community — all will be part of the mix. Poetic sensibilities will be part of the visual experience; changing moods that reflect the harsh life in the bush under a brazen sun, the quiet darkness at night, pierced by calls of the wild ones.
There will be expressions of the context at different levels; hopefully spontaneous testimonials covering the activities of those personalities and communities involved; notably as well, specific physical spaces and features of the rural landscape. Animated graphics can also be expected. Music on the soundtrack will be chosen carefully to support and drive the tone of the film. This may include tribal songs, especially as they relate to local customs.
‘In-the-midst-of’— immersed in life is the sought-after viewing experience. Intimacy is key. The program will focus on locations where the topic at hand is most appropriate which will mean ‘discovering’ and/or revealing that reality, coming upon a specific situation where the issue will be subsequently addressed.
